Are Facials Useful For Treating Acne?

If you have acne, just about any acne treatment on a salon menu is tempting. However, before you put down your hard-earned money, you’ll want to know whether or not it’s going to work.

Do Facials For Acne Clear Up The Skin?

The short answer to this question is “sometimes” however; there’s no easy cut and dried answer. The results from a facial will be dependent on many differing factors.

It’s Going To Take More Than One Treatment

Just like any other treatment for acne, results are going to take some time. You’ll have to be prepared to commit to several facials to get the best results from facials.

On average, facials are done every week or every other week. This will keep the benefits from the facial going. You’ll want to be consistent to get results. You’ll have to follow the proper treatments and skin care regimens during your non-facial days.

You’ll also need to know that the skill of the esthetician that performs the facial will play an enormous role in the improvement of your acne. Don’t hesitate to ask her questions and have her explain the process and treatment regimen to you.
Facials are superb if you have comedonal acne which is the kind that includes whiteheads and blackheads.

If you have blackheads and non-inflammatory blemishes you’ll notice that your skin clears up and looks a lot better and you won’t be breaking out as often.

While you’re getting your facial, your esthetician will perform extractions by manually removing the blockages and comedones. All of those blackheads and whiteheads will be gone, and your skin will look and feel much better.

If you regularly go for facials, you’ll see an improvement in comedonal and non-inflammatory acne. You’ll want to keep up with your treatments to prevent them from returning.

Facials won’t completely clear up your inflammatory acne. Mild inflammation can be taken care of at the salon. However, if you suffer from moderate to severe acne, you’re better off seeing a dermatologist. A good esthetician will be able to recommend this to you if it’s out of her realm of expertise and she can refer you to the right dermatologist.

More advanced cases of acne won’t be cured with facials. However, an esthetician can give complementary treatments in addition to the regular dermatologist’s treatments. Many dermatologists have an esthetician in their office that works along side of them.

What Happens During A Facial As An Acne Treatment?

An esthetician will thoroughly clean the skin in a variety of ways. They may use a mask, a steam bath, and a facial massage to work the treatment to the best benefit for the patient. They may also use various products to help reduce the oil on the surface of the skin, soothe the skin and hydrate the skin. It will also contribute to reducing the dead skin cells.

Estheticians can also suggest products use at home such as moisturizers and cleansers that won’t agitate the acne.

If the skin is inflamed, the extractions will be held to a minimum if at all.

No dermatologist or esthetician should ever try to extract deep, inflamed blemishes such as nodules or cysts.

Should you choose to have facials as a part of your skincare routine, it’s important to note that you’ll get the best results if you do so on a regular basis. Always be sure that you tell your esthetician if you’re on any topical or oral medications. This way you can avoid any unwanted reactions.

A good example is that vigorous exfoliation shouldn’t be done on anyone who is taking Accutane or using a topical retinoid such as Differin or Retin A. If a dermatologist is treating acne always ask them if you can safely do a facial treatment before you get one done.
